Lent Groups

Not sure whether to give something up this Lent?
Come along to the Benefice Lent Group instead and join in the discussion!

As an experiment this year, beginning on Sunday 5th March, our Lent Group will meet on 5 Sunday afternoons from 4:30pm until 5:30pm, in the hope that the new time will appeal to a wider group of people. Some ‘customer research’ has revealed that evenings aren’t convenient for some, who prefer a day-time meeting. Others can’t attend during weekday working hours, so we will see whether this works better
Using the Rochester Diocesan Lent programme, the sessions follow the journey of Jesus from his public ministry to the cross, using as a lens the crowds who accompany different stages of that journey. The sessions use the Gospel of St Matthew, which is the lectionary Gospel for this year. We begin at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, with the familiar passage from Matthew 28 sometimes called ‘the Great Commission’. We inevitably approach mission and discipleship from a post-resurrection perspective, and that is where we start this Lenten journey. We end by the well-sealed and guarded tomb, waiting for the power of God to break shackles and end death’s reign.

Heavenly Father, our beginning and our end,
who is always more ready to hear than we to pray,
be with us in our listening,
in our history and in our future
that we might see your work in the world about us
and seek your face in the communities we serve.
